Shadows were falling as day followed the beckon of dusk. With those shadows came the eerie glow and stutter of street lights that went on and off, flickering as shadows leapt and shrank down the ghostly streets as Porter and Rex followed the roads that led out of town. Then they turned into another street, one that Porter had been dreading to reach since noticing the end of the road was plunged into darkness. Here no lights were on, all the street lighting was out and the houses were dark and silent. This area must have been evacuated early on in the crisis, now and then they had stopped, trying to gain access to vehicles, but few remained. Those that did were abandoned or burned out, there were a few wrecks littering the roads, too. Porter and Rex stayed quiet as they walked on and searched for a vehicle, knowing the undead, if close by in the shadows, would be drawn to the sound of their voices.

A shadow seemed to move at the end of the street where tall hedges rounded off a garden. Porter blinked, looking again at the sight of shadows looming up as the moon lit silver as clouds chased by. The hedge seemed to shiver and shift, looming out and then back, a shadow merging with the shape cast on the pavement by the post box on the corner, as if two shadows touched and then parted again. Hearing Porter gasp, Rex looked intently, then shook his head.

“Just the wind,” he remarked.

They were still heading towards the end of the darkened street, but now more slowly. The shadow crept out, then back again, like a sinister game of hide and seek. Porter's hand shifted down, over the holstered gun.

“Are you still Rex?”

“I am Hatter!” he replied.

“Okay...” Porter took a deep breath, “Stay behind me. Go back to your Wonderland. I think there's something lurking at the top of the road.”

“On a lovely evening like this one? Look up there, the stars are out!”

Just my luck, Porter thought angrily, walking on as Rex followed, he's seen a hint of trouble and he's gone back into his fantasy world! Then Porter tried another tactic.

“Possible armed suspect up ahead, Rex! Be ready.”

As he was offered the weapon Rex took it, and by the way he handled the gun, checking it and then holding it in a firm grip, he seemed to be partially back on board again. Porter was breaking into a sweat as they crossed to the middle of the road and carried on walking down, giving that corner at the top a wide berth. If anything was lurking, they would see it from the road as they stepped out, and as long as they had the moon to guide them, a direct hit would not be a problem...
